A sudden summer storm brought the magnolia tree down on your roof, and the resulting water has left your furniture and carpeting soaked and soggy. Your first step should be to call your insurance company so that they can send an adjuster as soon as possible to assess the damage and issue a check. Although some items will need to be replaced, there are some that may be able to be salvaged if you are willing to work hard .

One of the first places that you would like to try to minimize the cost of water damage restoration is the carpet. Carpeting is expensive and not always the easiest thing to replace, considering all of the furniture moving and other considerations. If there is any chance at all in saving the carpet, you should try to do so before replacing it.

First, assess the actual amount of water damage to the carpet itself. If it is a concentrated spot on a relatively new carpet, you might be able to do a spot removal and replacement instead of tearing up a whole roomful of rug. If the carpet can be matched, then that damaged section will be removed and replaced by a new piece. If the damage is more extensive however, then patching will be less possible.

Do not gauge the damage based solely on what you can see. Underlying water damage may be warping your sub flooring and allowing dangerous mold to grow in the padding and carpet backing. With the amount of people who have grown seriously ill by contact with such mold, it would be in your best interest to take care that this not happen in your home. Pull up a small section of the carpet and feel the backing and the pad underneath- if it is dry, then you might be able to easily care for your carpet without a lot of expense.

Use white towels and soak up as much of the extra water that you can, just be sure that you use white towels or you will end up transferring color and making a bad situation worse. After you have soaked up as much as possible with the towels, aim a fan toward the remaining wetness and make sure that you monitor for the growth of mold. Make sure that the floor that you put the fan on is dry for safety.

After the floor is dried, monitor it for odor, fading or other signs of damage. Water damage restoration can be a nightmare well beyond the actual water itself. It is simply heartbreaking to have gone through the struggle of water damage restoration, only to find the carpet is still ruined. Although there are products on the market to assist in the minimizing of water damage restoration costs, they are not likely to be as effective if they are not used carefully and diligently. Of course the water damage restoration companies want you to use their services, but their costs can be out of the reach of some budgets even with good insurance coverage.

Flood waters are basically considered as the highest form of unsanitary liquids that may cause different physical and mental hazards to humans and animals alike. So before worrying about the flood damage, it is best to worry about the history of its source first. Knowing where and when the flood damage is about to take action, what had happened, or what is happening is very important in dealing with its aftermath. Such awareness is also very crucial for the community so as to exercise proper prevention and other precautionary measures.

For a more ready response to flood damage, here are some tips that will help every person combat the water damage brought about by harmful flood water:

1.) Be aware at all times of the geographical facts of the place where you reside. Where you are living, working, or doing your day to day activities is your area of responsibility. Exercise your right to know everything about these places. Make sure that you are aware about the water sources of these places. Are sewages around there or somewhere near? Is it always raining in your place? If so, where is the drainage systems situated? How much maintenance is provided for these facilities? Is there any history available as to how many times flood has taken place in your area? Are there any forms or bodies of water somewhere near your place? What are the chances of these rivers or lakes rising in level?
2.) Know the appropriate basic responses in times of flood and what to do after flood damage. Few people are ready for disasters, even if these actually happen with their awareness. Flood is among the expected results of natural disasters. One can predict when and where it may occur, aside from the fact that history can play a big role in understanding its occurrence. Therefore, one can manage and overcome its posed troubles and annoyances. Flood damage therefore, can also be prevented by knowing these facts.
3.) Identify which flood damage needs attention first. Categorizing the important versus the less important ones in cases of flood damage is very basic to everyone. But still, people can get confused. If so, one can follow the rule of thumb: lives first, properties second, and the other things last. In times of life threatening occurrences, everyone is responsible for taking their own selves to safety. Before one should take care of their neighbors properties, it is a must to secure yours and your loved ones first. The civic duties for others will come next so don”t be a hero to others if you can”t be one to your family first.

These are the main tips to prevent unnecessary losses to flood and flood damage, and these will also help promote better awareness and responsible to other family members. You can start adopting these guidelines to ensure that there will be less risks and difficulties for everyone each time there are natural disasters, not only water or flood occurrences. It is always best to be prepared with these tips than be sorry later for things that you could have possibly done.

In recent times, the place where I live was hit by a severe flood. The water damage was huge as the flowing water did not spare my carpet and spoilt it really bad. I was emotionally attached to the carpet and for sentimental reasons did not want to part it. Not even in my wildest dreams, I had ever though of replacing this lovely carpet. Despite the string of good old memories attached to the carpet, when it got wet in the flood I was stumped and did not know what to do. I reasoned that if paper and documents can be restored after water damage then why can”t be a wet carpet revived?

There are some simple tips and tricks to be followed while drying a damp or wet carpet. Actually there are separate specially designed vacuum available to extract water from the dry water. Those of you who have heard about this gadget also would know that it is operated in a different way. So, you should know how to use t his in case of emergency and having a wet vacuum would do no good if you are not sure of operating it.

This is lot different from the regular vacuum cleaner that you use in your everyday life. The regular household vacuum cleaner should not be used under wet conditions and if you dare to do so, you are inviting danger. Wet vacuum carpet cleaner is technically designed to handle wet carpet without any electrical shock and other trouble.

Not all the house has a wet carpet vacuum cleaner. So, there is nothing to worry even if you don”t have one. There are centers that rent these vacuum cleaners for a fixed rate and you can take it on rent from them. In case you could not locate such service centers, then make a call to the professional carpet cleaning companies and ask if they rent the cleaning gadgets. If you are lucky, you can get it from them. Otherwise you can ask them to suggest a place where you can pick carpet drying equipment. Even for this if they do not have an answer, then obviously you are left with no other choice and ask them straight how much they would charge for drying the wet carpet.

In interior places and not so well developed cities you don”t find too much of carpet drying equipment rent stations. The carpet drying service provider take advantage of this fact and try to mint money from the customers. If you are not privileged to choose from a list of service providers in your locality, then you have to go with whatever rates they quote. In any case it would be lower than buying a new carpet and you don”t loose much especially when the carpet is close to your heart. The fortunate folks who have more than one wet carpet drying service provider near by the house can cross check with the individual store rates and then arrive at one t hat is cheap and also provides quality work.

Wet carpet must be cleaned and dried without any delay. For minor damage, you can sort it yourself. If the carpet is soaked and totally wet, it is suggested to rely on the professional expertise and experience of carpet drying companies though they come at a cost.

If your getting ready to move to another home then you know first hand how tremendous the job of sorting through closets, the attic, the basement, the garage and then that never ending pile up in the shed, and you know how that can be. You then find yourself just staring at it all wondering what you are going to do with it all when the areas that it all came from have to be clutter free. Well don”t worry yourself any longer because I have a great storage solution that fits anyone’’s situation and budget.

Have you ever heard of portable storage containers? Believe it or not, they have proven to be the most affordable and the most convenient solution to my clutter problems when I had to move from my apartment. You”ve had to heard and seen of them by now their practically everywhere. What they are, are solid steel constructed containers that are portable and versatile. They get dropped off at your house or business location. Most people put them in their driveways. You put anything nonperishable into them and you get to keep the key to lock it up each day after you have put stuff into it.

This was so great for me because I was moving and needed to clean out years of stuff that I was saving in my attic, basement and all the closets in my house. And, you know that when realtors show your home all those areas have to be clutter free. I got the idea from a friend who lives in the out skirts of NYC and use a portable moving pod to clear out a barn and several smaller sheds. They worked perfectly for them.

The best part about portable moving pods is the convenience of renting them for a month. I think they run on monthly rentals. There are several companies to choose from nowadays each offering different styles and sizes. This was fabulous because not only did it give me a secure space to store my stuff but when the time came and I had to tackle all that I stored in the container I was able to take my time sorting through it. I was even able to have a yard sale out of it.

So the next time you need storage consider portable moving pods as a better means to saving money and a convenient solution for storage. You can search the internet for great storage and moving container options. With so many moving pods and pods moving company to choose from compare quotes and services to select what suits you best and to bet the best rate. No matter where you live in NYC, you can find that you”ll save in the end by comparing rates first.

Many properties still contain large amounts of copper and more worryingly lead piping. This type of pipe has been extensively used for over fifty years but even though water companies strive to eliminate any traces of lead in drinking water, particles of lead still occur in the water leaving people’’s taps. This why it is advisable to replace these older pipes with a new material, such as one of the more modern materials is MDPE or Medium Density Polyethylene.

Reasons to replace old piping not only concern the traces of lead in drinking water; but as metals are more prone to wear and degradation they are subsequently more susceptible to leaks. Additionally, older pipe usually has a smaller diameter; this can also lead to poor water flow, especially bad for that power shower. It is due to these reasons that changing to MDPE pipe is so advisable.

In most cases, for homeowners that are worried about lead piping it is possible to have their pipes checked by an operative from the water board or even the council. In many instances this check can even be free of charge. Ultimately however the homeowner is responsible for their own pipe work, in addition they are also responsible for the pipe between the property and the street boundary, normally up to the connection to the mains supply. In extreme circumstances however the homeowner may be responsible for pipe beyond the limits of the main; this however is a rarity. In cases where neighbours share a link to the main there is a joint responsibility.

Fundamentally it boils down to liability, if the homeowner wants to replace their existing pipe with MDPE they will have to pay for the entire system up to the junction with the mains supply; this is unless the pipe work within the property is pre 1935, any pipes before this period will be replaced at the expense of the water board.

When assessing your own pipe work in the property it is important to see how the water enters the house; typically this can be seen at the place where the stop tap is located. The kitchen sink is normally the best place to start, remember that if the pipe is not made of a plastic such as MDPE it will be made of lead or iron. To find out which a simple test can be applied, all that is needed is to lightly scratch the pipe’’s surface, if it is lead it will be shiny and silver underneath the oxidised layer.

The new pipe that you should install, as previously stated will be constructed from medium density polyethylene (MDPE). In most cases this will be twenty five millimetres in diameter. However this is not to say that copper no longer has its uses in piping; the connections from the tap to the MDPE connector will normally be constructed from copper. MDPE however does have its limitations, in ground where there may be a suspicion of hydrocarbon contamination; for example petrol or oil, MDPE pipe should never be used. In these instances a wrapped PE pipe or PVC wrapped tube should be used.

It is hoped that this article has given homeowners a clear understanding of firstly why lead piping should be replaced with MDPE, secondly how to find out if new piping is needed and finally how to go about the replacement process.

You have to understand the basics of log home designs in order to choose one that suits your needs perfectly. Designing your log home will be a welcome challenge if you wish to involve yourself in the creative process, once you have mastered these basics of home designs

1. The character of the log utilized

Contrary to what you might think, logs do not come solely in straight shapes. They might be D-shaped, round, square, rectangular, or Swedish cope style. These are the basic shapes that will be used to build your log home. The D-shaped logs have three sides that are rounded and one side is flattened. The Swedish cope log has a bit of the lower portion of the log chiseled out so that it can be set properly.

2. The type of the log utilized

You should know about the pros and cons of all the wood types you wish to use for your home designs. Rest assured you wont be able to choose something thats all be perfect. Instead, you must realize that every species of wood has something going for it. You could choose cedar, cypress, hemlock, Douglas fir, spruce, oak, yellow pine and white pine. If the building and maintenance processes are done correctly, then you would be able to enjoy the comforts of your log home for a long time without any doubt.

3. Milled or Peeled logs

The logs that have their bark and sapwood removed are called peeled logs. This task can be done manually or in a mill. On the other hand, milled logs are smoother and more consistent. Once they are passed through the machines, they are carved into the shape that is required for construction.

4. Corner system

This can again be subdivided into four categories

a. Dovetail corners- rectangular or square logs are cut so that there is a fan shaped wedge produced. When the logs are stacked together, the ends of two logs are locked perpendicularly.
b. Butt and Pass- here one log is cut when it is joined by the next log, whereas the other continues beyond the corner. Most often, the butt log fits into a cutout space that is provided in the passing logs.
c. Notched- a saddle shaped notch is dug into the bottom side of a round shaped log. The notch on the underside of the top log straddles the top side of the log that arrives from the perpendicular wall. Then both of these logs continue beyond the corner. Such corners are easier to fasten and are more traditional.
d. Post corners- the end of the logs are cut off perpendicularly with respect to its length and then sealed at the corners. This makes it a vertical post. Since vertical posts do not fit in with horizontal logs, such constructions do not have the look of the regular log homes and they need a different kind of engineering.

If you decide to devote more time to learning about various designs, get hold of home plans of houses that have already been built with the help of logs. Reviewing a few of these plans will provide you with interesting ideas. You could also chance upon a plan that details what you have actually been looking for!

Most people think about home improvement as all the little things you can fix or do around your house to make it more livable. But home improvement projects don”t have to be limited to small budgets or simply involve a few minutes of work on the weekend.

Many home improvement projects require some sort of financial loan because they are large scale projects that require payment on materials or labor all at once in order to get the project started. These larger home improvement projects require some sort of bank or lender issued home improvement money.

Larger home improvement projects that require financing could including adding an addition to your home, remodeling your home to add more space, upgrading the appointments in a kitchen or bathroom, installing a new furnace or cooling system, replacing a roof or installing siding or simply putting in a new swimming pool.

There are two general types of home improvement loans. There are unsecured home improvement loans and a secured home improvement loans. Within those two types there are many different loan vehicles and products which can give you extra money, though each has it’’s own good points and potential drawbacks. The differences among the loan vehicles are many, but let’’s focus on the two types of home improvement loans that are generally available:

Unsecured home improvement financing: An unsecured loan of any type involves you borrowing money without putting anything up for collateral. That means that if you can”t pay the loan then there is technically nothing the bank can immediately take away from you. Unsecured loans are granted based on many factors, but a steady income and good credit score definitely help. Home improvement credit cards are technically unsecured loans that are meant to be used for home improvement projects. Unsecured loans are meant to be paid back over a short period of time and will almost always have a higher interest rate.

Secured home improvement financing: A secured loan of any type is a loan which involves you offering something to the bank in exchange for the money. If you get a home improvement loan based on the equity in your home, then you are really trading part of the ownership in your house to the lending institution. As you repay the loan you are buying back your house. Secured home improvement loans usually involve larger amounts of money but do have a lower interest rate and offer a longer time to pay it off.

Even if you have bad credit or very little equity in your home you can still sometimes take out a small home improvement loan without much trouble. Borrowing money to improve the home you own is often seen as a much safer option for many banks than borrowing money to purchase a new home entirely.

What makes underfloor heating systems different from the conventional radiant heating systems? Could it be the high-tech underfloor heating thermostats? Or the actual obvious that one is fixed under the floor boards rather than affixed against the wall? Actually it is both of the above and more! Most homeowners will not have had floor heating installed, because they simple do not know enough about this kind of system.

Small differences such as the underfloor heating thermostats are programmable from a separate area, in separate rooms and can be timed for each individual rooms. The same however, cannot be done with radiant heating because they very often run as a hydronic system, which will only for each of the heaters to be controlled in each room. They can be set to a timer, but altogether rather than separately - meaning that if you want your bedroom heater on but have the rest of the heaters off, you will have to do this individually. This will not reduce the cost of your heating bills.

Whilst radiant heating thermostats can come digital and can be controlled from a separate area, underfloor heating thermostats do not need the individual to manually turn off the heating systems in each room, nor do they need to raise the temperature on the thermostat to heat the rooms up quickly. This does not use a lot of energy to warm each room up as they work by the concept of heat rising and distributing heat evenly.

The installation process is quick and if you are skilled craftsmen then this can be done by yourself. This will mean that any carpets you have will need to be removed as the heating system will not be affective with carpeting. The process requires accurate measurement of the flooring, plenty of digging underneath the floor boards and some wiring (if you are installing electric underfloor heating). These are relatively cheap to keep running and need low maintenance. Furthermore they do not run a very high heating bill and are energy efficient.

Radiant heating requires more time to connect them to the plumbing system and also need the added space to be fixed onto the wall. Radiant heating also tend to heat the rooms relatively quickly, around the top half of the room, which means people will generally feel warmer in the top half of the body and are will therefore be more prone to headaches and fatigue. However, they are more common and people prefer this type of heating system as they do not take so long to warm up the rooms. These calculate to be more expensive in the long run, as they usually need to use a higher temperature setting than underfloor heating.

Custom blinds are a great way to showcase your personal style throughout your home. With the endless choices that custom blinds provide, you can express yourself in various different ways in each room. From sleek and sophisticated metal blinds to rustic and warm wooden blinds, you can create a specific effect and express style just by using custom blinds on your windows. With custom blinds you get a look that is truly one of a kind and that will never be duplicated.

Material

Perhaps the most important choice when choosing custom blinds that will make a statement in your home, is picking the material that your blinds will be made from. Choosing blinds made of certain materials can create dramatic effects throughout your house. You can go with the same material for custom blinds in each room, or you can mix it up to create different statements of style.

Fabric is the most versatile material that custom blinds can be made from. Fabric allows you to choose from a variety of colours, patterns, and textures that can match the style that you display throughout the rest of your home. Or, use unique fabric blinds to make a bold statement in each room, while the rest of your furnishings remain neutral.

Wooden blinds can be sophisticated, but for the most part are used to create a rustic feel and a feeling of warmth. Set among other country style settings in your home, wooden blinds can be the perfect addition to complete your down home look.

Plastic and metal materials for custom blinds can create a simple and sophisticated look. Although colour can be used to make a statement and to match your personal style, these simply chic materials allow you to create a neutral and balanced look in any room.

Custom Blind Styles

There are a variety of custom blind styles that you can choose from for your home. Each of the styles can provide a different effect and statement of style in your home, and it is good to explore all of your options before making a final decision on the one that works best for you.

Roman Blinds are the style that works best with the use of fabric material. If you want to use fabric as the material for your blinds, then you will most likely want to consider roman blinds for your blind style. The dramatic layered effect that roman blinds create, can add instant elegance to any room. They are simple to operate and do an excellent job of keeping warmth in during the winter and sun out during the summer.

Venetian blinds most commonly come in a vinyl, plastic, or metal material. They can however be custom made using whatever material you like. Venetian blinds provide the most versatile lighting control of any style of blinds, but usually tend to be plainer in design. If you are looking for custom blinds that make a chic and sophisticated style statement in your home in a subtle way, then Venetian blinds are a wonderful style choice.

Vertical blinds can create a unique look and style in your home. Vertical blinds are less common, as most blind styles tend to be made in a horizontal direction. Again, like Venetian blinds, vertical blinds tend to commonly be made from a vinyl, plastic or metal material. With custom blinds however, you are free to choose and material that will best fit your needs. This style of blinds allows for good control of lighting, and a style that is less likely seen in other’’s homes. Vertical blinds work especially well on large windows or sliding glass doors.

Roller blinds are another unique style less likely to be seen in the homes of friend and neighbours. These can be made from almost any material. For example, bamboo is a common material used to make roller blinds, but they are versatile enough to be made from fabrics and flexible vinyl as well. Roller blinds provide less control of lighting however, as they can only be rolled up or down to various heights, but they work well in rooms in which full or no lighting is required on a daily basis.

Size

Properly fitting custom blinds can make a statement of style by themselves. Even a plain white Venetian blind can give off an air of sophistication when it is fits a window perfectly. Having someone come in to professional measure your windows for custom blinds can be well worth the extra cost. Take into affect how the blinds will be used, what materials they will be made of and what style they will be made in when determining what length and width you would like your custom blinds to be.

Custom blinds are used in homes throughout the world to create statements of style. When you have the power to control every aspect of your blinds, you can manipulate the style, material, or size to create an effect that is an expression of yourself. Whether you wish to express a style of simple elegance, welcoming warmth, or dramatic appeal, it can all be done with unique custom blinds.
