When I was young, life was simple: Zenith or RCA, Ford or Chevy. Try to buy a TV lately? With the plethora of choices and the glut of information confronting consumers today, making intelligent decisions can be quite challenging. But if you know what you”re looking for, the process gets much simpler.
Take carpet cleaning for example. All carpets are made from washable fabric, just like most clothes. Even oriental rugs are washable.
Water, detergent, wash, rinse, spin dry. End of story. No one’’s improved on the washing machine and no one’’s improved on steam cleaning which basically brings the washing machine to your carpet. You can add a lot of bells and whistles and invent a lot of fancy names but it won”t change the result. Incidentally, steam cleaning, hot water extraction and steam extraction are just different names for the same thing.
Steam cleaning is the most effective cleaning method available. All other cleaning methods will leave more dirt and residue in the carpet. That’’s why leading carpet manufacturers recommend it. And that’’s why knowledgeable carpet cleaners invest in the far more expensive steam equipment. So what do you look for?
1. Do they steam clean?
2. Are they good at it? Experience and reputation are important. As simple as the concept of steam cleaning is, it takes years of training and experience to become proficient in the chemistry and other variables involved in fabric care.
3. Are they reliable? You can often get a feel for this when you call.
4. Are they professional? Often the quality and the source of the advertising is a clue, Pennysaver verses Home & Garden for example. Was care and thought put into the ad or was it just slapped together?
5. Are their prices reasonable? Too low is suspicious and too high is not necessary.
Most of us spend much of our time trying to find time. It sounds like a paradox but it’’s true. A huge time waster is making the same decision over and over again because we don”t take the time to think it through fully the first time. You have to spend time to make time. It’’s like investment dollars. Take that extra time and think long term when you make your decisions and you”ll soon have time to make more time and one day you”ll have all the time you”ll need.
You can start with your carpet cleaner. It may take several attempts before you finally find the right company. When you do, you won”t have to think about it any more.
