By Byron Zoucks

Mold infestation is a common problem especially in homes where air humidity is high. The most publicized toxic black mold can pose a serious threat to a person’’s health. They can be easily recognized by their black color which is slimy in appearance.

These can be seen as dark splotches in your kitchen tiles, walls and especially on the corners of your comfort rooms. Areas with extremely wet conditions can favor the growth of toxic black mold. Previous floods or undetected long term leaks are also the most common contributing factors to the growth of toxic black mold.

Professional costs

Once a home is infested with mold, cleaning up can be very expensive. The actual cost alone of hiring a mold remediation specialist for one wall that is mold contaminated averages at around $3,000. This includes a professional visit for mold inspection, the process of determining the type of mold found which involves mold samples sent to independent laboratories, removal of the mold, and also the cleaning up of your home. The cost also covers the gear the technicians wear, the special machine used to filter the dirty air called Negative Air machines and also the chemicals involved in the process.

Temporary housing expenses

Preparing a site for mold remediation involves a lot of prep work. The part of the house infested with toxic black mold is isolated from other rooms. The air ducts are sealed off and doors are closed. This is necessary to keep mold spores from entering other rooms in the house. During this procedure, the family is advised to move out of their homes to prevent exposure to health hazards during the process. This alone is another expense to consider.

Health issues

Harmless as they may seem, these molds can cause mild and even severe health problems to individuals who are exposed to it. Serious health problems like lung disease, chronic fatigue syndrome and even learning disabilities to name a few are just some of the problems caused by toxic black mold. Mold remediation should be considered since these health problems could potentially cost you a fortune. Although some of the health problems are reversed once an individual stays away from an infested house, it is always better to get rid of the molds using professional mold remediation procedures.

Devaluation of your home

A home infested with toxic black mold looses its value. The extent of damage the mold has done will determine the devaluation of your home. You can review your home insurance policy to check whether mold infestation is covered. And in most cases, a toxic black mold infestation needs to be disclosed on the sale of your home.

Related costs

When your home is infested with toxic black, it can be a financial strain to seek professional help from a mold remediation specialist. Treatment of toxic black mold is costly. These costs include not only the treatment of the actual mold but also costs related to moving out from your home during the onset of treatment. However, the cost of mold remediation can be comparatively cheaper when comparing it to health costs and the devaluation of your home that you will surely encounter in the long run.

About The Author

Byron Zoucks distributes information on homeowner concerns.
Believe it or not, millions of people are benefited by document drying process and they are finding this technique extremely useful.

By Osmund Aft

Believe it or not, millions of people are benefited by document drying process and they are finding this technique extremely useful. This is being used by folks all over the world and every single day some one with a water damaged document is approaching the nearest document drying center to restore the piece. As a matter of fact, document drying has been used by people for quite some time and the significance is growing in leaps and bounds with each passing day.

Take a look at the reviews and views shared by people in various forums and you would realize to what extent people are relying on this method to preserve the document and how happy they are to know about this technique. As you read through the testimonials and reviews posted by satisfied customers you would see how glad they are that such a process exists and it is helping them.

Fortunately we never had an occasion to try document drying. Few months back one of our friends was in deep trouble with wet office documents and he finally got each and every paper restored by subjecting the water damaged documents to drying. Usually document drying takes about 4-8 days and this basically depends on the extent of the damage, nature of process and type of paper. His documents required just 4 days of drying and they came out perfectly.

Let us see some of the factors that determine the drying time. The size of the document and also the age are crucial. Antique books of fifteen century come with leather binding and if these get wet they deserve special document drying process. By far these are easy to restore. Compared to the old books, the latest ones that are made of highly modified leather are difficult to restore. So, the wet books from the latest edition should be attended to immediately or else the paper will start getting separated and molds also begin to grow.

Document drying company is a store house of experts with experienced people trained in drying and they can guide you better. They would give you more information on the degree of water damage and what exactly should be done to get back the documents. They would analyze the condition of the wet document and suggest the most apt drying method. The professionals can deal with wet documents and you can be confident about getting back the documents in good condition.

We know how bad it is to lose important office documents, bank and other financial papers, sentimental letters, emotional pictures and family albums and other memorabilia and losing those means wiping out lot of memories associated with it. We have seen some of our folks going through this and so we know what we are speaking about.

As I have seen them benefited by document drying process, I am confident about the success of these techniques. I am sure that if at all my documents or papers or books get wet and damaged in water, I can take them straight to document drying center. I always carry their number in phone and have saved it so that I don”t misplace or lose it. I don”t want to take the risk of noting down the document drying company’’s phone number in a phone diary and see that becoming a victim to water damage.

About The Author

Osmund Aft is a storm damage writer.

By Isolde Werry

Mold removal from drywall like professionals can be done easily by following a few steps. Mold removal can be effectively done when the sources of water and moisture can be stopped. Look at the places that are most water prone such as the bathrooms and the kitchens. The water leakage has to be stopped before the mold removal can take place. Check the attic and the basement areas for mold. For mold removal, inspection of the places is as important.

Assess the situation before you proceed for mold removal. If the mold area is larger than 10 square feet, then it’’s advisable to call in the professionals. If the mold is visible, then mold removal can be done easily at home. Surface mold removal on bathroom shower curtains and furniture tops can be easily done with mild detergents like borax and water. But if the places are hard to reach, then mold removal can become difficult.

Process for mold removal of drywall

While performing mold removal, always wear protective gear. These include respirator masks that are commonly available for $30 or less. Protective goggles should also be worn during mold removal. Swear latex gloves to ensure that you don”t touch the mold during the mold removal process.

When covering the area for mold removal, seal off the area with plastic sheets to prevent the mold spores from disbursing into other areas. Use adhesives and duct tape to contain the area while doing mold removal. You can even place an air scrubber inside the containment area while doing mold removal. Of course the professional air scrubber for the purpose of mold removal cost thousands of dollars. But a smaller air scrubber which cost far less will work equally well.

Hepa vacuum the surface to remove the mycelium, mold spores and other possible mycotoxins from the drywall. This will prevent them from been released in the air during mold removal. Using the glove box method, cut a 6mm plastic that is 4″ wider and longer than the area affected. Secure the plastic in place with adhesives and then take a drywall knife or a razor knife and cut the dry wall. Place it carefully inside the garbage bag and duct tape it securely to prevent the spores from escaping during the process of mold removal.

Again hepa vacuum the areas which look seemingly decontaminated by the mold. This will catch the remaining mold spores during the mold removal process and ensure that the whole area becomes mold free. Always dry out the entire place to ensure that there is no moisture. If there is any moisture then the mold will come back.

When to employ a professional for mold removal

Remember that not all molds are toxic, but the home testing kit may not always be accurate about all molds. Take the help of a professional for mold removal if you can”t do it yourself. While employing a professional for mold removal, check the credential and look for references.

About The Author

Isolde Weery is a storm damage writer.
A good rule to live by is to update your bathroom every seven to ten years. It might come as a surprise for some, but seven years is actually the average amount of time an American lives in one house.

By Gary Nealon

A good rule to live by is to update your bathroom every seven to ten years. It might come as a surprise for some, but seven years is actually the average amount of time an American lives in one house. There are many factors that contribute to that number, but if we go off of raw data, you can see that an updated bathroom might be in your future.

Take a look at your bathroom. There is a good chance that it is “dated” and has aged without you noticing. Too many times people live there lives and don”t see what is in front of them everyday. That blue tile from the nineteen seventies or that gaudy white vanity that went out in the eighties might still be part of your bathroom scene. It’’s OK, these things get overlooked until someone brings it to your attention and here is what you can do.

When I do a bathroom renovation the first question is always: “How much will this cost me?” It is a fair question and it is especially pertinent in today’’s volatile restate market. My answer has recently changed. I now say, buy the supplies online and I will work with you on the install price. Yes buying bathroom products online has saved me thousands and now it can do the same for you. The choices are almost endless, you can go with basic RTA products (RTA stands for Ready To Assemble) or you can get as fancy as a high end vanity. Either way the savings are about thirty to forty percent over a retail store like Home Depot or Lowe’’s. I know, I could not believe it either, but online suppliers have less overhead and less expenses, thus the savings can be passed onto you.

I have found that using keywords has sped up my searching. If that does not make sense to you, I will say it another way. Say you”re looking for an un-assembled bathroom vanity and you want to look online. Instead of typing (into a search engine) the word bathroom, you would go more specific like “RTA bathroom vanity”. This will instantly get you to a site that has pre-assembled products. Be careful all search engines have “PAID” searches on the top of their list, instead go to the third or fourth down and click on that, this is not a paid search and will give you more of what you want. (Note - the paid searches usually show up a little different from the regular searches and you should be able to see the difference.)

So that new bathroom is literally a click away. Go online, use a few key words and start searching. Remember to avoid sites that claim they will give you “free shipping”, it is simply not true and if it is, look at their pricing, I am sure it is inflated enough to cover the shipping costs. Other than that, good luck and start shopping online for that new bathroom.

About The Author

I have been remodeling homes for over 15 years and I have come up with a way to add thousands of dollars in value with a minimal investment. To find out how visit my website http://www.rtacabinetstore.com

By Charmaine Pierce

As we all know, one of the worst types of damage that we may encounter in our day to day living is water damage. When water damage wreaks havoc in our place, our daily routine is interrupted. In many instances our kids can”t go to school, we can”t go to work, or even do the mundane tasks that need to be done. Furthermore, our personal belongings, important documents, and valuable possessions may be subject to its destructive capabilities.

Dealing with water damage in our house can be a major headache but if we can somehow manage the damage straight away and using the right methods, we can go on with our normal lives much faster and with less hassle. Here are some simple guidelines to remember:

The Do’’s

1. If the outside temperature is above 60 degrees, use dehumidifiers if available. These will bring the humidity down and allow things to dry at a much faster rate.
2. Use fans to circulate the air and assist in drying. These can be placed particularly in rooms where not much sun can get inside.
3. Remove as much water as possible by mopping and blotting.
4. Wipe furniture dry. If necessary, have pieces furniture dry outdoors under the heat of the sun.
5. Lift draperies off the carpet, loop through a coat hanger, and place the hanger on the drapery rod.
6. Prop up wet furniture cushions and place small wood blocks or aluminum foil under furniture legs.
7. Remove wet area rugs or other floor coverings. Apply the necessary drying and cleaning techniques for these so as to prevent the growth of mold and mildew.
8. Open furniture drawers, closet doors, and luggage to enhance drying.
9. Move photos, paintings, and art objects to a safe, dry location. Apply the appropriate restoration techniques on these or call a professional for help.
10. Remove wet fabrics and dry them as soon as possible. Hang furs and leather goods to dry separately at room temperature.
11. Remove damp books from shelves and spread out to dry. Or you may also use dehumidifiers which can dry off these books slowly without having to remove them from the shelves.
12. If water damage takes place during a cool season, leave the heat on; if in summer, use an air conditioner if available.

The Don”ts

1. Do not use an ordinary household vacuum to remove water. Heavy duty vacuums are available for this type of clean up.
2. Do not use any electrical appliances while standing on a wet carpet or wet floors.
3. Do not go into rooms with stagnating water if the electricity is still on.
4. Do not lift tacked down carpet without assistance from and expert as lifting carpet incorrectly could result to shrinkage.
5. Do not waste time in calling for professional help if it is needed. Water damage can pose serious health hazards if not acted on immediately.

The above water damage do’’s and don”ts are fairly simple and can be performed with presence of mind and a good head on one’’s shoulders. Since water damage incidents can just happen in our daily lives without any warning, common sense and quick action should prevail at all times.

About The Author

Charmaine Pierce does write-ups for homeowner problems.
Every year smoke alarms save someones life and if you don''t have one installed at home perhaps you should read this article.

By Alex Stacey

These three types of smoke alarms are all good alarms however, some models are better at certain aspects of detection than others. The three are optical, ionization, and heat alarms. There should always be smoke detectors in every part of your home. Countless lives have been saved due to these alarms.

When considering how quickly a home can go up in flames the method that has alerted people the fastest and allowed them the extra minutes they needed to get out of the home were smoke alarms.

The smoke alarm that is called the budget smoke detector for those who need just a basic model to alert them in case of a fire is the ionization smoke detector. This type is better at detecting flames than smoke. If for instance a mattress were smoldering this type may not detect the smoke as fast as others. This type is better suited for a kitchen or living room rather than a bedroom.

A photoelectric detector is another type of smoke detector. These use light to detect smoke. These types are better at detecting smoldering fires such as the mattress mentioned above. They reflect light inside a chamber in the smoke detector and when enough smoke goes into the detector to reflect the light it sets off the alarm. These are better suited for bedrooms although some people use them in conjunction with the fire detector.

A heat detecting alarm will be set off when the temperature rises and goes past a certain level. This type does not function as a smoke detector. The consensus is that this type may not provide enough prior warning for getting out of a fire but they are good types to use in kitchens. They should not be used in bedrooms however. This is available in several types - rate of rise - which is set off if the heat rises faster than a certain rate; specifically faster than 8.3 degrees centigrade per minute. The fixed temperature is set off if the heat rises to the temperature the alarm is set on. The combination alarms are set off if both occur.

Optical or Visual alarms are flashing lights that come on when there is the threat of a fire. These are typically used because there are many people who have difficulty hearing. The hearing loss in America has been estimated at one in ten. This will allow those who cannot hear the alarms to know there is a fire.

These types of alarms along with the fire alarm signals are used together in many places. The ADA (American Disabilities Act) calls for both types to be used in new or remodeled construction to make them compliant with the ADA standards.

Although smoke alarms are more common today than ever before, there are still buildings that do not have them. The home without a smoke detector is in extreme danger if there would be a fire in the middle of the night. These alarms are proven to save lives by warning people in enough time to allow them to get out of a burning building.

The basic model which is not expensive should be the least that is installed in homes. Every year, especially around Christmas, there are fires from overloaded plugs and Christmas trees. The fire departments in many towns give smoke detectors away to help gain awareness of how serious this situation is.

About The Author

Fire Safety Equipment is the UKs leading supplier of fire extinguishers and smoke alarms at low prices.

By Jim Thornton

Mold is a fungus that occurs naturally in the environment and it enters your home as tiny spores. The spores need moisture to begin growing, digesting and destroying and you will find they start in damp or moist areas. Mold can digest what it grows on and can do some serious damage in our homes. It can eat into paper, cloth, carpet, rugs, and even our walls and ceilings. The mold grows best when there is lots of moisture from a leaky roof, high humidity, or carpets and furnishings that stay wet too long. There is no way to get rid of all molds and mold spores from your home but you can control mold growth by keeping your home dry.

Children and also people with allergies, asthma or those whose immune systems are not so strong are susceptible to the diseases caused by some types of mold. Inhaling these mold spores can lead to serious health problems such as diarrhea, high fever and fatigue, difficulty in breathing, headaches, congestion, joint pain or skin rashes. Mold in nature can be very beneficial, but indoor mold can make life in our homes very dangerous.

You know you have mold when you smell the “musty” odor or see small black or white specks along your damp walls where warm moist air condenses on cooler wall surfaces. Inside cold exterior walls, behind dressers, headboards, and in closets where articles are stored against walls are some common areas to find mold. Some mold is hidden growing behind wall coverings or ceiling tiles. Even dry, dead mold can cause health problems, so always take precautions when you suspect mold. If you notice mold or know of water damaged areas in your home, it is time to take action to control its growth.

There are many ways in which to prevent mold growth in your home. Reduce the humidity in your home to between 30 and 60 percent by using a dehumidifier. Open windows and doors to increase air flow in your home, especially along the inside of exterior walls. Use a fan if there are no windows available. Install and use exhaust fans in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms as well as ventilate and insulate attic and crawl spaces. Check around your windows for signs of condensation and water droplets. Wipe them up right away so mold can”t start to grow.

Use of a hepa filter helps reduce air born spores but once they are trapped deep into the fiber of the carpet or furniture they can be hard to remove. Vacuuming frequently with a vacuum that has a hepa filter is a good way to remove these spores. It is important to make sure that your carpets of furniture dry quickly after washing. Many rental carpet cleaners or some steam cleaning companies do a poor job at removing water from your carpeting, leaving them damp for too long. This is one of the main causes of mold growth.

When using a carpet cleaning company it is important to find one that uses a low moisture method of cleaning. Many of these methods achieve great results and your carpets or furniture dry quickly. This helps to prevent mold growth in your home. The biggest danger from too much water in your carpet cleaning method is getting the underpad wet. You can”t get enough air circulation under the carpet to dry it properly and as a result you are almost guaranteed to get mold. Following a few simple tips will greatly reduce any mold growth in your home and help to prevent any development of allergies, asthma or any other breathing problems as a result of wet carpets or furniture in your home.

About The Author

Jim Thornton has been carpet cleaning for over 30 years.
Some people don''t like artificial plants and trees but there are many benefits over the real thing. Leanr more about them in this article.

By Alex Stacey

Why buy an artificial tree? One reason should be enough: it saves you from all the maintenance required to keep a real tree, without compromising on the aesthetic department!

You will never have to worry about watering it, supplying the right kind of fertilizer, or making sure it gets the required amount of sunlight; all you have to do is dust it from time to time. Isn”t that every tree-lover’’s most cherished dream?

If you need more reason to be convinced about going for an artificial tree, how about the fact that it will also never require the tedious task of trimming, which you have to keep doing to your real trees, to prevent them from overgrowing your home? It will also free you from climactic restrictions of botany, letting you have a palm tree in your home in Alaska as easily as you might have a conifer in Hawaii.

Artificial trees that you get these days look almost as real as a live tree. But if you want something truly awesome, check out what is called a preserved tree. Artificial trees are generally made of plastic and other synthetic material, but a preserved tree, in contrast, is made by assembling natural materials around an empty trunk. The look is stunningly authentic, and your guests won”t be able to distinguish it from a live tree by either touch or smell.

The most common of artificial trees is the palm. An artificial palm tree can come in all types, shapes, and sizes, both synthetic and preserved. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you pick the one best for you:

1. You can have either a floor plant or a full-size tree. The height of a floor plant varies between two and four feet. A full-size tree will begin from five feet, and can go up to as high as you want.

Table fake palm trees fall under floor plants, but they are generally small versions of the full-sized tree. The size of this will be approximately three feet. These look the best on a table, but can also be put at an entry way or a reception area with limited space. While buying, these will come in a basic basket or pot, but you can add to the aesthetic effect by replacing the pot with a large decorative planter. Cover the top with artificial greenery like moss or grass.

Full-sized artificial palm trees come both with a pot and without. You can order any size, though the most popular size is from five to six feet. Both potted and un-potted trees can be put in a decorative planter. For an un-potted tree, a nice touch will be surrounding the trunk with decorative rock. A large tree will have more space around the trunk, so let your creativity run wild as you fill this up with greenery.

2. Most of us might be unaware of this but palm trees (in reality) come in many different species, so you get a number of different types of artificial varieties as well. Of these, the Areca Palm and the Coconut Palm are the most popular. It”ll help to do some research on the way you want your palm to look before ordering that artificial tree.

3. The Christmas tree is probably the first artificial tree to be made. Artificial Christmas trees these days don”t only look incredibly realistic, but also come in completely decorated versions. For example, you can buy a pre-lit tree that already has the lights set up on it, or you can have one fixed with glitter and/or snow in the branches. The best type of pre-lit tree available is the fiber optic tree.

The needles in this tree are made of the same material as fiber optic lights, so you”ll never need to replace a bulb or worry that the lights may get too hot for safety. If you are bored with your Christmas tree being always green, you can even look for trees in all colors from white to purple and blue.

About The Author

Buy artificial trees, including palm trees, bamboo trees, topiary and ficus trees at http://www.artificialflorist.co.uk/artificial-trees.
Purchasing a sewing machine involve careful decision. Considering features, budgets and dealers can be wise move as a sewing machine is a long-term investment. Read more.

By Roberto Sedycias

Sewing machines were invented to reduce the amount of manual work performed in the fabric industry. With the pace of technology, today, the sewing machine has evolved into its modern form.

Along with the appearance, the productivity and efficiency of the sewing machines have improved so as to meet the modern stitching requirements. The sewing machines are now designed to perform specific tasks. Some machines are intended for embroidery stitches, some have work feeder to move in curved path, some have work holder frame, and many other state-of-the-art technologies to make the functions easer for the users.

For any sewing enthusiast sewing is a fun and buying a sewing machine can be exiting. However, sewing machine can last for a lifetime with you and hence, can be considered as your largest investment among all of your sewing tools. An informed decision can be a smart step in this regard. So, you should take time to know more about sewing machines and purchase the one accordingly to save yourself from frustration. There are some basic things that you need to consider carefully while choosing the right sewing machine for you.

Before selecting a sewing machine it is really important to know the kind of stitching you want to do and make a list of features required for that. It will free you from the hassle of confusion in the store while visiting.

Features apart, it is the ease of use that is important. In the store you will find sewing machines with many advanced features. But they are barely of any use if you are not comfortable with handling them.

When you are purchasing a sewing machine you must have adequate knowledge about stitching and the machine itself. Hence, check for the availability of the basic features in it. Needle threader, bobbin, bobbin winder, needle, needle plate, thread cutter, foot or knee pedal, tension and pressure knobs, etc are the basic features of sewing machines.

But if you take a look at the features of advanced sewing machines they will include larger capacity bobbins, limited adjustment for changing stitch types, built-in button-holder, feed control adapter for darning and embroidery, free-arm access to tubular area, decorative stitches and monogramming capacity, programmable and interface with computer, light weight and portable. Apart from that there are many other features of sewing machines that are considered according to the requirements.

The next aspect that you need to judge while purchasing sewing machine is the budget. The rates of the machines are available from the low budget to most sophisticated ones. Hence, investing in a sewing machine involves careful decision about how much you are going to use it. Your expenditure should be decided accordingly. Again, if a machined is not designed according to your purpose there is no point investing in it.

Whether you are purchasing your sewing machine online or from a local dealer, you get to know the dealer before spending your money. If you are choosing a local sewing machine dealer, help on any problem is just a phone call away. They enable direct support from the manufacturer of the machines. Sometimes, the local dealers arrange classes on handling the machines and it has got many advantages. However, if you opt to purchase your sewing machine from an online dealer, make sure that they have a servicing centre nearby.

Purchasing sewing machine should not be a hasty decision anyways. Gathering information is not a difficult task with the availability of the Internet. However, you can visit the local stores for the sewing machines to know more about the different models of different companies. You can test drive the machines before taking one to your home. So, be careful while purchasing the right kind of sewing machine and make your own world of fabric and fashion.

About The Author

Roberto Sedycias works as IT consultant for http://www.polomercantil.com.br
