One of the biggest dangers when it comes to the occurrence of a flood is that it usually happens without warning. Even with increased information, most people are still lulled into thinking that it only happens to other people. A flood could not possibly happen in their neighborhood – or so they think.

The ugly truth about floods is that it really does not discriminate on where and when it occurs. It just does, and usually without warning. It can happen because of a variety of causes that range from household mishaps such as a broken waterline to natural disasters, like a severe hurricane. Whatever the reason for the flood, the best way to deal with it is to be prepared.

The fundamental question to be asked is this: If a flood does happen in your area, would you know what to do? Fortunately, the steps on how to deal with the danger of flooding do not require too much energy from a person. All that is needed is a calm attitude and lots of common sense. It is only when you know how to properly react, that you can save your property and more importantly, yourself.

Step One: Listen for information

Thanks to increased technology and the power of media, most floods can now be predicted. During a storm, it is best to tune in to the radio or the television to listen for information. Monitor the weather and check if there are any warnings that have been issued. Always remember that flash flooding, or a flood that occurs suddenly, is possible. If your area is located near bodies of water, the danger increases so you must be extra vigilant. If it is reported or you have observed that flooding may occur, move to higher ground as soon as possible.

Step Two: Secure your Property

If you need to leave your home, you need to make sure that you secure your belongings. You should store all your valuables and important documents in a place that the water will not reach. If you have a safe, then it is even better. If you still have enough time, put any outdoor furniture inside the house to prevent them from being damaged or even swept away.

The next step would be to turn off and unplug all electrical appliances. It is also recommended that you disable the main power switch of your house. Every smart homeowner should learn how to heed this warning. It is a well-known fact that electricity and water can be a lethal combination. If the water has already entered your home, you should no longer attempt to go near an electrical outlet or switch, as it is far too dangerous. Finally, lock the doors and windows behind you. This will not only prevent the flood from entering, but it will also stop intruders from taking advantage of the situation.

Step Three: Secure Yourself

The most important thing to remember during a flood is to resist the urge to lose your mind. You should always try to maintain a level head so you can think clearly. Just remember that in an emergency such as this, you have to be in control of the situation. Flooding may be an alarming event but it is no match for a calm and prepared reaction.
