Choosing The Right Fire Safety Products

Fire Safety products are readily available in most department stores and online. They come in an assortment of different types, classes and prices. Fire Safety products range from smoke detectors to carbon monoxide detectors. They are accompanied by manuals for reading and instructions to follow. Online websites can even have an interactive site for children, which is quite effective and it teaches the youngsters to spot the dangers around the house, the rules for getting out of the house if there is a lot of smoke, and the importance of having an escape plan.
No matter what brand of safety products you buy make sure they have the BSI code and are completely safe for home use. My rule for smoke detectors is one on every floor and one at every door. In other words, there should be a smoke detector on the main floor near the kitchen; which can even have a nuisance button that can be pushed if it is just smoke from cooking. A second smoke detector should be placed on the upper flight, where the bedrooms are located, to wake everyone from a deep sleep if a fire erupted. The third goes in the cellar where the boiler or furnace could be located, if you have a cellar.
The Carbon Monoxide Detector can be placed on the main floor near the fireplace or near to the boiler. In the case of a faulty leak or plugged chimney, that detector will best detect the presence of carbon monoxide and help you to get the family members out as soon as possible.
The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are a violent headache, nausea or vomiting, and over-whelming fatigue. Call 999 after you get all family members out of the house. Have a plan of action and an escape plan in place for all members from all rooms in the house.
There is not a piece of equipment in the world which can save you if you do not keep it maintained and up to date for inspections. The fire brigade will gladly send a representative over to your house to check on all equipment, including the boiler and cooker. He/She will check the carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors for batteries and make sure they are in clean and good working condition. The representative will check with you for an escape plan, a meeting place for all members to congregate and a way to leave a smoky house.
