When it comes to buying furniture, it is worth making an investment in well designed quality goods. A beautifully sculpted armchair can make as much of a statement as a piece of fine art, and when you introduce such pieces into your home, you are making a statement about your style. Here are some top tips on how to make the most of classically designed home furnishings in every room of your house.
Kitchen
The Tulip table and chair by Finnish designer Eero Saarinen are a fabulous addition to a kitchen. The clean white lines add an air of sterility to a room, which is just what a kitchen needs, especially if it is used as a breakfast room. The seat has a deep red padding to offer comfort from the hard plastic seat, and is removable for easy cleaning, just what you need if a bowl of cereal gets tipped over!
Lounge
There are many sofas and arm chairs that could be recommended for the living room, but often other items of well designed furniture get overlooked and regarded as insignificant. Put it this way, once you are sitting down, you won”t be looking at your designer sofa, so invest in an item of furniture you can gaze at such as a coffee table. The Noguchi coffee table designed by Isamu Noguchi is a simple and well balanced item of furniture, it is also one of the most sought after coffee tables in the world. Using glass and sculpted wood, the designer has captured the essence of his Japanese heritage.
Study
Home furnishings often include items for the office at home, or a study. Comfort and professionalism needs to go hand in hand in a study, and one of the best products for this is the Lounge Chair by Charles Eames. Although it was originally intended to be used in a lounge, the fifties feel of polished moulded plywood mixed with black leather fell out of favour as chintzy sofas came on the market, and the lounge chair was moved to the office. The chair also comes with an ottoman, which gives an opportunity to put your feet up when you”re not working.
The key to choosing classic home furnishings for a room is longevity. An investment in a piece by a world class designer is a serious business. Only go for quirky if you really love it, as it will be in your house for a very long time; and remember that no matter how aesthetically pleasing the design is, it needs to be practical, it is furniture after all.
